Doc ranger horse rescue

At Birchwood Homestead in the Mackenzie basin, DOC ranger Gary Hayes faced a life-threatening situation when he was called to help a horse named Manuka trapped in a float. The horse was unable to breathe, and time was running out.

Gary was repairing the roof of historic stables when the call came in. He rushed to the scene and quickly assessed the situation. With the nearest fire brigade over 40 minutes away, he knew he had to act fast.

Using an angle grinder, he cut away the metal partition that held Manuka captive. “I used my angle grinder to cut away the metal partition,” Gary recounted. His quick thinking and decisive action made all the difference.

Angie Leckey, who runs Adventure Horse Trekking NZ, witnessed the ordeal. She said, “We were so lucky that there were two DOC workers in the close vicinity as Manuka decided to launch himself over the front bar of the float, head down to the ground.” Their presence was crucial in ensuring Manuka’s safety.

The local fire brigade and a veterinarian arrived shortly after Gary began his rescue operation. Jack Zorab, another DOC worker involved, remarked, “It really was a team effort.” Everyone worked together seamlessly to ensure Manuka’s safe extraction.

Fortunately, after this harrowing experience, Manuka has fully recovered. The incident highlights not only the dedication of the Department of Conservation staff but also their ability to work under pressure with limited resources.

Gary had no prior experience with horses before this rescue but stepped up when it mattered most. His bravery and quick decision-making saved Manuka’s life, showcasing how ordinary people can rise to extraordinary challenges.
