F1: Formula 1 returns to Miami for the Grand Prix

The Miami Grand Prix returns on May 1, 2026, marking a fresh chapter in Formula 1 after a forced break. This year’s race at the Miami International Autodrome brings significant rule changes focused on enhancing both safety and competition.

Initially held four times, the Miami Grand Prix has yet to see a winner emerge from pole position. Kimi Antonelli leads the championship this season, chasing his third consecutive win. At just 19, he is the youngest driver ever to hold this position.

Mercedes is looking to break its streak of four unsuccessful attempts at winning this event. “Miami is the only race on the current calendar that Mercedes have yet to win,” noted a team spokesperson, highlighting their determination for victory.

This season’s changes include adjustments to engine regulations, agreed upon after extensive discussions among team principals. According to one insider, “The rules tweak… are intended to improve both the racing and safety as a result of the new engines and the wide differences in speed.”

In past races, Max Verstappen secured victories in both 2022 and 2023, while Oscar Piastri claimed victory in 2025. Lando Norris also made headlines last year by winning the sprint race in Miami.

Key statistics for the Miami Grand Prix:

  • The race distance is 308.326 km, consisting of 57 laps.
  • Kimi Antonelli holds a narrow nine-point lead over George Russell in the standings.
  • Mercedes leads Ferrari by 45 points in the constructors’ standings.

As anticipation builds for this year’s event, fans are eager to see how these changes will impact the competition. With a contract extending until 2041, the Miami Grand Prix is set to remain a fixture on the Formula 1 calendar for years to come.
