Christian Horner is weighing a potential move to MotoGP, but only if he can secure a leadership position overseeing the entire sport. Recently, he was spotted in the MotoGP paddock during the Spanish Grand Prix, which has ignited speculation about his future.
After parting ways with Red Bull last July, where he spent two decades at the helm, Horner’s ambitions appear to extend beyond simply running a single team. Roberto Chinchero, a motorsport expert, noted that “the only role I can imagine Christian Horner in is head of everything, Liberty Media man, the Domenicali of Formula 1, the MotoGP boss.” This indicates a significant shift from his previous role in Formula One.
Liberty Media is currently exploring ways to integrate F1 experience into MotoGP. They have recently rebranded Dorna as the MotoGP Sports Entertainment Group while retaining Carmelo Ezpeleta as CEO for now. However, there are whispers that Liberty may seek new leadership soon.
Horner has substantial backing from investors and has considered various pathways back into motorsport. His influence as MotoGP CEO would surpass his previous role in F1—he became an extremely powerful figure during his tenure there.
While some speculate about Horner’s future direction, uncertainties remain. It’s unclear whether he will actively pursue a role in MotoGP or choose to remain within Formula One. As Chinchero remarked, “It’s true that the Ezpeleta family is still there, but when Liberty comes in, they bring in their men.” This suggests significant changes may be on the horizon for both sports.
