Gurrumul aria hall of fame: Gurrumul Inducted into ARIA Hall of Fame

“You can’t imagine the soundtrack to life in Australia without these artists,” said Federal Arts Minister Tony Burke, reflecting on the recent induction of Geoffrey Gurrumul Yunupingu into the ARIA Hall of Fame.

The ceremony, set for June 11, 2026, at Carriageworks in Sydney, marks a significant moment in honoring Gurrumul’s contributions to Australian music. He was a member of the Gumatj clan from Elcho Island in Arnhem Land and passed away in 2017 at the age of 46.

Known for his exceptional vocal talent, Gurrumul captured hearts both locally and globally. His performances included notable venues like Carnegie Hall and events such as the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert. His music legacy continues to inspire many.

Key inductees alongside Gurrumul include:

  • Kate Ceberano
  • Spiderbait
  • The Living End
  • Vika and Linda

Annabelle Herd, CEO of ARIA, emphasized that these artists have defined moments in time and continue to resonate with audiences today. The induction is part of the 40th anniversary celebration of the ARIA Awards, underscoring the cultural impact these musicians have had.

While Gurrumul’s physical presence is missed, his spirit lives on through his music. As Burke noted, “These artists have played a vital role in shaping the Australian music identity.” The upcoming ceremony promises to be a heartfelt tribute to a remarkable talent whose influence endures.
