Aircraft: Airbus and Joby Aviation Transforming Development in Spain and New York

How are Airbus and Joby Aviation reshaping the future of aircraft development? In Spain, Airbus spearheads the Integrated Combat Training System to replace outdated F-5 aircraft. Meanwhile, in New York, Joby Aviation’s electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft promises to transform urban travel.

Airbus is at the forefront of a vital initiative. The Integrated Combat Training System (ITS-C) program aims to enhance Spain’s military capabilities, involving a remarkable 60% participation from national industry. Marta Nogueira, Head of Business Spain at Airbus Defence and Space, emphasized the program’s strategic importance, stating, “As a result of this national programme, Spain achieves three strategic milestones: we ensure technology transfer in key areas…”

Set to deliver an initial batch of 21 aircraft starting in 2028, the ITS-C program reflects a commitment to innovation and self-reliance. This initiative comes after the contract was awarded in December 2025.

Across the Atlantic, Joby Aviation is making waves with its cutting-edge electric aircraft. Capable of reaching speeds up to 200 mph, it can travel from JFK Airport to Manhattan in approximately 10 minutes. Eric Allison, chief product officer at Joby Aviation, remarked on the unique design: “It’s an aircraft, but that’s about the only similarities.”

The quiet operation of Joby’s aircraft—producing only about 45 decibels during flight—stands in stark contrast to traditional helicopters, which can exceed 100 decibels. Allison noted that this quieter sound is achieved through a multi-propeller design that uses wings for lift rather than a large rotor.

Boeing continues its role in commercial aviation as well. In Q1 2026 alone, Boeing delivered 143 commercial aircraft, contributing to a backlog exceeding 6,100 airplanes. This backlog represents a staggering total value of approximately $695 billion.

The developments from Airbus and Joby Aviation signal significant advancements in aviation technology. The next steps for both companies will be closely watched as they push boundaries in military and urban air travel.
