Josie Gibson Advocates for Grassroots Football Teams in Birmingham

In Birmingham, Josie Gibson has taken a stand for grassroots football teams struggling to provide new kits amid rising living costs. The challenge is significant; 86% of parents express that these financial pressures make it increasingly difficult to support their children’s passion for football.

The situation has prompted Iceland Foods to launch a search for grassroots teams in need. This initiative, part of the “Kits for Kids” campaign, aims to provide hundreds of young players with much-needed new kits. Richard Walker, managing director at Iceland Foods, emphasized the importance of this support.

“These teams do so much for so many kids, so it’s disheartening to hear how many are struggling to afford new kits,” Josie Gibson remarked. Parents are feeling the pinch too; 84% of children’s football teams in the UK rely on contributions from parents or fundraising efforts to secure new uniforms.

Statistically, the situation is alarming:

  • 22% of teams need to fundraise every time a new strip is required.
  • 67% of parents report that their children have played in hand-me-down or old kits.
  • 16% say their kids have had to wear damaged kits that aren’t fit for purpose.

The campaign will not only help teams acquire new kits but also offer winning teams a full set of home kits along with a £100 Iceland voucher. Parents and coaches can apply directly through the Iceland website, making it easier for those in need.

Richard Walker noted, “Our Kits for Kids campaign will support hundreds of young players by providing new kits.” The excitement is palpable as they look forward to seeing teams take to the pitch in their brand-new strips.

This initiative underscores the vital role community support plays in youth football. As Josie Gibson shared, “As a mum with a young son who loves football, I know how important grassroots football is, and how quickly the costs can add up.” The hope is that this campaign will ease some of that burden and allow more children to enjoy the beautiful game.
