In a remarkable turn of events, Matt Mowat’s 1966 Chrysler Valiant AP5 was recovered after being stolen from a workshop yard in Gore on Sunday morning at 6:06 am. This incident not only highlights the challenges of car theft but also showcases the power of community and social media in bringing about change.
The sky-blue classic car, worth around $30,000, was taken while it sat in Mowat’s workshop yard. Security footage revealed a man of medium build stealing the vehicle. Following the theft, Mowat reported it to the police but took matters into his own hands by launching a private search for his beloved car.
On April 28, 2026, a tip-off led Mowat to a Waikoikoi address where he discovered his car. “We located it before the cops could get to it and then once we found it, we let the cops know and then they went in and done their stuff,” Mowat recounted with relief.
The car is now with police for forensic examination. Mowat has cherished this vehicle for over 20 years, and its sentimental value extends beyond its monetary worth. He expressed his joy saying, “It’s just in a shed and it’s still in working order at the moment, so we’re pretty happy about that one — I’m actually really happy, I’m really ecstatic.”
Mowat suspects that the Chrysler Valiant may have been stolen to order for parts or shipping. “Time is of the essence here, as I suspect it’s been stolen to order, with a view to cutting it up for parts or shipping it offshore,” he said. His determination to recover the car included a willingness to pay if necessary: “To be honest, I’m prepared to do whatever necessary to bring it back, including pay, if that saves it being broken up.”
This incident serves as a reminder of how community vigilance and social media can play significant roles in recovering stolen property. The support from locals helped Mowat find his cherished classic car again.
