Airplane news: SWISS International Air Lines to end inflight Duty Free service

SWISS International Air Lines will discontinue its inflight Duty Free sales by September 30, 2026, a decision that underscores changing passenger purchasing behavior. The airline’s analysis revealed that fewer travelers are making purchases during flights.

The discontinuation of the Duty Free service began during the COVID-19 pandemic when SWISS first paused inflight shopping. A spokesperson for SWISS noted, “The spontaneous purchase from the onboard duty-free trolley has become the exception – no longer the rule.” This shift mirrors broader trends in the airline industry where companies are adapting to new consumer behaviors.

Several airlines have already followed suit. KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and SAS ended their inflight Duty Free sales since 2020, while British Airways is expanding its Duty Free offerings across long-haul routes. These changes reflect an evolving landscape in inflight shopping.

Meanwhile, Copa Airlines is taking a different approach. The airline recently ordered 40 Boeing 737 MAX airplanes with options for 20 more, aiming to expand its fleet significantly. CEO Pedro Heilbron stated, “For Copa Airlines, the signing of this agreement represents an important step in further strengthening the operation and connectivity we provide from Panama.” This expansion highlights a contrasting strategy to that of SWISS.

The fleet expansion will allow Copa to connect to 88 destinations across 32 countries. As they integrate these new aircraft powered by LEAP-1B engines, they aim to enhance their service offerings while adapting to changing market demands.

As airlines like SWISS adapt to consumer preferences, it raises questions about future trends in inflight shopping and how passengers will engage with airline services. Observers are keen to see if other carriers will follow SWISS’s lead or if they will find ways to innovate within the inflight retail space.

The landscape of air travel continues to evolve, influenced by shifting consumer habits and economic factors. With more airlines re-evaluating their services, it remains essential for them to stay attuned to what passengers want as they navigate this changing environment.
