Daniel Saifiti announced his medical retirement from the NRL on May 4, 2026, ending a promising career that was marred by a persistent shoulder injury. The 30-year-old played for the Newcastle Knights and briefly for the Dolphins, making significant contributions to both teams.
Saifiti debuted for the Newcastle Knights in 2016, alongside his twin brother Jacob. He quickly made a name for himself, being named Rookie of the Year that season. Over his career, he played 191 NRL games, scoring 21 tries, and represented NSW in seven State of Origin matches. He also played three Tests for Fiji.
In December 2025, Saifiti underwent surgery on his shoulder but struggled to regain full strength. He faced limited movement in his arm and could not participate in heavy contact work. Despite an extensive rehabilitation process, he ultimately decided to retire, stating it was a difficult choice but necessary.
Terry Reader, CEO of the Dolphins, reflected on Saifiti’s impact: “There is no doubt Daniel was our best player in the first eight weeks of last year and we have really missed him since then.” Reader added, “It is sad for it to end this way but Daniel has had a career he can be proud of.”
During his brief stint with the Dolphins in 2025, Saifiti was considered their standout player. However, he played just one month before his injury sidelined him for the rest of the season. His last game was in round eight against Canberra.
As observers look back at his career, many remember Saifiti’s immediate impact on his teams and his dedication to the sport. His journey serves as a reminder of how injuries can dramatically alter an athlete’s path.
What lies ahead for Saifiti is uncertain, but he leaves behind a legacy that resonates with many young players aspiring to make their mark in rugby league.
