Flight Incident at Newark Liberty International Airport

A United Airlines flight, Flight 169, struck a light pole and a tractor-trailer while approaching Newark Liberty International Airport on May 3, 2026. The incident occurred around 2 p.m. local time as the aircraft was landing after a journey from Venice, Italy.

The flight carried 221 passengers and 10 crew members. Fortunately, the plane landed safely and taxied to the gate without any injuries reported among those onboard. However, the truck driver sustained minor injuries and was taken to the hospital before being released.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are currently investigating the incident. Officials have not disclosed the exact cause of the accident but have indicated that it occurred while the aircraft was vectored into Runway 29, which is shorter than typically used for this flight due to windy conditions.

Runway 29 measures 6,725 feet, which does meet the recommended minimum runway distance of 6,000 feet for a Boeing 767-400. Still, questions remain about whether proper safety protocols were followed during this landing.

Kris Van Cleave, an aviation expert, emphasized that “the question investigators are going to want to understand is, how did that happen?” This incident has raised concerns among both passengers and aviation professionals regarding airline safety and airport operations.

Sam Immanuel, a frequent traveler through Newark, expressed his worries: “It’s concerning, definitely.” Meanwhile, Governor Mikie Sherrill stated, “I’m grateful the aircraft landed safely, and all passengers and crew are unharmed.”

This event highlights ongoing discussions about aviation regulations and passenger rights in light of recent incidents. As investigations continue, many will be watching closely to see what findings emerge regarding safety protocols.
