Dembele’s Dominance Secures Top Spot
France claimed the top position in World Cup Group I following a 4-1 victory over Norway, with Ousmane Dembele scoring a hat-trick. This win sends the 2018 world champions and 2022 runners-up into the knockout phase of the tournament. Dembele’s three goals came within 25 minutes during the first half, marking the first time he has scored more than once in a match for France.
The match saw Kylian Mbappe threaten early, hitting the crossbar just 21 seconds into the game. Six minutes later, Mbappe delivered a cross-field pass to Dembele, who then scored past goalkeeper Egil Selvik. Mbappe assisted Dembele again in the 20th minute, leading to another goal. Norway quickly responded with a goal from Thelo Aasgaard, but Dembele completed his hat-trick in the 32nd minute, becoming only the third France player to achieve this feat in a World Cup.
France‘s players were reportedly motivated to win as a tribute to coach Didier Deschamps, who had returned home from the United States for his mother’s funeral. Both France and Norway had already secured their places in the Round of 32 before the match. However, France aimed to top the group to benefit from a more favourable travel schedule in the tournament’s North American route.
Managerial Approaches and Knockout Stage Outlook
Norway‘s coach, Stale Solbakken, made a strategic decision to rest most of his starting players, including Erling Haaland and captain Martin Odegaard, who had played against Senegal earlier in the week. This approach simplified France‘s task. Solbakken‘s selections suggested satisfaction with finishing second in the group standings, despite Norway needing a win to surpass France.
Early in the second half, Jorgen Strand Larsen missed a penalty for Norway, which was saved by Mike Maignan. This save made Maignan the first French goalkeeper to save a World Cup penalty, excluding shootouts, since Joel Bats in 1986. Oscar Bobb also forced another save from Maignan, highlighting some defensive vulnerabilities for France. Desire Doue scored France‘s fourth goal with a header from a cross by substitute Bradley Barcola in the final moments of the match.
France‘s assistant coach Stephan noted that the current team is significantly different from the 2022 squad, with more than half the players not having previously participated in a World Cup. He emphasised the need to observe how the team progresses and elevates its performance against stronger opponents, focusing on achieving a balance between offensive and defensive play.
Senegal’s Strong Performance and Group Standings
In another Group I match, Senegal secured a dominant 5-0 victory over Iraq, keeping their knockout hopes alive. Iraq was eliminated from the tournament. Senegal scored early in the fourth minute through Abdoulaye Seck. Iraq‘s situation worsened when defender Rebin Sulaka received a red card for fouling Sadio Mane.
Despite being a man down, Iraq showed attacking intent in the first half, but Senegal failed to capitalise fully. However, the second half saw a goal surge from Senegal. Ismaila Sarr scored his fourth career World Cup goal, making him his country’s leading scorer in the tournament. Substitutes Pape Gueye and Iliman Ndiaye also contributed with long-range strikes.
Senegal finished third in Group I with three points, behind France and Norway, while Iraq finished fourth with zero points. Senegal now awaits the conclusion of the group stage to determine if they will advance as one of the eight best third-placed teams to the Round of 32.

As a result of topping Group I, France is anticipated to face Sweden in the first knockout round, while Norway, as runners-up, is expected to play against Ivory Coast.
