Oscar Piastri has affirmed his confidence in his current contract with McLaren, despite recent reports linking Max Verstappen’s management with the team. The Australian driver stated that he has received multiple reassurances regarding his position at McLaren, indicating the team’s satisfaction with his performance.
Speculation about Verstappen potentially moving to McLaren intensified during the Austrian Grand Prix weekend, with reports suggesting discussions between Verstappen’s representatives and the team. This comes amidst the ongoing ‘silly season’ in Formula 1, where driver movements are a frequent topic of discussion.
Piastri’s Contract and Team Confidence
Piastri, who joined McLaren in 2023 as a rookie, signed an extension with the team until at least the end of 2026. He expressed his contentment with his current situation, stating, "I’ve got a contract in place, multiple reassurances that the team are very happy with me and I’m very happy with the team." He added that he is "very happy where I am and very happy with the situation I’m in," aiming to continue the team’s recent success.
His teammate, Lando Norris, is also on a multi-year deal with McLaren. Both drivers have been publicly supported by McLaren CEO Zak Brown and Team Principal Andrea Stella, who have backed their current line-up. Brown previously noted that he would be "very surprised if Lando (Norris) or Oscar (Piastri) went elsewhere because they’re very happy."
Piastri’s performance has been notable, particularly last season when he finished third in the standings. This season, despite an inconsistent campaign for McLaren, Piastri is fourth in the drivers’ championship after eight rounds, with 80 points, and has secured two podium finishes. He has also finished in the top five in each of the previous three grands prix.

Verstappen Speculation and Team Reactions
The future of Red Bull’s four-time world champion, Max Verstappen, has been a significant talking point throughout the season. While Verstappen is under contract with Red Bull until 2028, reports suggest his contract may include a clause allowing him to seek a new team if he is not in the top two of the drivers’ championship standings by the mid-year break in August. Verstappen currently sits seventh in the drivers’ championship.
The speculation intensified with the announcement that Verstappen’s long-time race engineer, Gianpiero Lambiase, is set to join McLaren in 2028. This move has further fueled discussions about a potential switch for the Dutch driver.
Both McLaren and Red Bull have addressed the speculation. McLaren CEO Zak Brown indicated that while his team would be open to having Verstappen "if for some strange reason, someone slipped on a banana peel getting out of the tub," he reiterated satisfaction with the current drivers. Red Bull Team Principal Laurent Mekies stated that Verstappen "has made clear" his desire to remain with Red Bull, provided the team can provide a competitive car.

Upcoming British Grand Prix
Looking ahead, Piastri shared his expectations for the upcoming British Grand Prix. He acknowledged the fluctuating performance across teams, noting, "I think everyone is a little up and down at the moment apart from Mercedes, they are the constant challenge at the very front."
Piastri expressed hope for a strong showing at Silverstone, stating, "I think we should be somewhere near the front, where exactly I don’t know but we’re still missing that final step to really challenge for wins." He concluded that with their best effort, McLaren is "in the running for hopefully podiums."
The British Grand Prix will feature both a sprint race and a grand prix.
