NRLW young talent poised for impact in upcoming season

The NRLW competition is set to showcase a new generation of talent as the 2026 NRLW season approaches. Several young players are anticipated to make significant contributions, with the season kicking off on Thursday night.

Among the emerging players is Lillian Yarrow of the Broncos, who made her State of Origin debut in Game Three of this year’s series. Having spent two years with the Cowboys, Yarrow has now joined the reigning premiers. Experienced forward Brianna Clark noted that Yarrow has embraced the team’s culture and is expected to be a long-term Bronco, learning from international star Shannon Mato.

The Bulldogs will see the promotion of Mary-Jane Taito, a hooker who excelled in the recent Tarsha Gale Cup season, earning her a spot in the Top 24 squad. Teammate Evelyn Roberts, a halfback, has also transitioned from the under 19 competition to the NRLW squad, with captain Tayla Preston expecting both to make an impact.

New Roles and Rising Stars

For the Cowboys, Abigail Roache is slated for a new role in 2026, shifting from centre to five-eighth following the departure of Kirra Dibb. Bree Chester, a lock, believes Roache’s increased involvement with the ball will benefit the team, highlighting her versatility to play in various positions.

Kasey Reh is set to lead the Dragons‘ attack in 2026, taking control after the off-season departure of veteran Raecene McGregor. Captain Brooke Anderson described Reh as a young leader within the group, anticipating a strong season from her.

The Eels have invested in Freedom Crichton Ropati, who was named player of the match in Parramatta‘s Tarsha Gale Cup grand final victory earlier this season. The winger, who is cousin to Bulldogs captain Stephen Crichton, is a development player for 2026 with a Top 24 contract for 2027 and 2028. Captain Mahalia Murphy expressed excitement about Crichton Ropati’s potential, noting her strong performance in training and recent games.

Sidney Taylor joins the Knights, making the transition from rugby sevens to rugby league. The 23-year-old, a former mainstay in the Australian sevens team, will play in the centres. Captain Yasmin Meakes is eager to see Taylor play, also mentioning Amelia Pasikala as another player expected to have a significant year.

Lili Boyle, an emerging lock for the Raiders, made her debut last season and has been added to the Top 24 squad after initially being on a development deal. Co-captain Zahara Temara anticipates a strong year from Boyle, who has focused on physical development during the off-season.

Impact Players and Team Dynamics

For the Roosters, Aliyah Nasio, an emerging prop, is expected to become a key player. Since her debut in 2024, her playing time has steadily increased, featuring in 12 games last season. Captain Isabelle Kelly highlighted Nasio’s hard work in the off-season, despite being out for the first two games.

Madison Ashby returns to the Sharks, marking a homecoming after her time in rugby sevens. Ashby played a key role in the Sharks’ Tarsha Gale Cup victory in 2018. Cronulla coach Tony Herman noted her versatility across centre, fullback, and five-eighth, advising patience as she re-integrates into rugby league.

Phoenix-Raine Hippi of the Titans, who scored nine tries in seven games in her debut 2025 season, is named to start in the centres for Saturday’s clash with the Roosters. Captain Georgia Hale believes the fleet-footed back has more potential to unlock in her second NRLW year.

Ivana Lauitiiti, daughter of Warriors legend Ali Lauiti’iti, made an immediate impact last year, scoring a try on debut during Magic Round. She played in six games during the Warriors’ return to the NRLW and represented the Kiwi Ferns in the Pacific Championships.

Finally, Namoe Gesa joins the Wests Tigers after a successful 2025 campaign with the Brisbane Tigers, where she helped them win both the Under 19 and senior QRL premierships. Tigers skipper Kezie Apps is excited to see the young, strong centre play and shine this season.

The 2026 NRLW season is scheduled to commence on Thursday night, with the Sharks hosting Newcastle at Ocean Protect Stadium.
