Auckland police informal bike rides

Auckland police are cracking down on informal bike rides due to rising safety concerns and previous incidents of dangerous behaviour. The Counties Manukau Police have issued warnings to participants, emphasizing the need for compliance with road safety rules.

Police have noted that several informal bike rides are scheduled for weekends in May. They are particularly concerned about the risks posed by riders to themselves and others, as well as the potential for anti-social behaviour during these events.

Inspector Dave Christoffersen highlighted the importance of following basic bicycle safety protocols. Riders must wear helmets and ride on the left-hand side of the road. Additionally, they are encouraged to ride in single file when in a group.

Key concerns raised by police:

  • Previous events have seen riders blocking cars and intimidating members of the public.
  • Police will monitor these events closely and take action against any anti-social behaviour.
  • Road rules apply equally to cyclists as they do to motorists.

Inspector Christoffersen stated, “Riders need to consider their behaviour and the risk they are posing to themselves and others.” He stressed that it is critical for everyone involved to take these safety messages seriously.

Event organisers are also urged to assist participants in adhering to the rules. This cooperation is essential for maintaining safety during group rides. As Auckland gears up for a busy month of cycling events, authorities hope that these measures will foster a safer environment for all.
