Brian May’s plans to expand his daffodil display in Elstead were thwarted by local officials citing safety concerns. The famed musician had hoped to plant additional bulbs to brighten the village green but faced opposition from the Elstead Parish Council.
Last year, May donated 3,000 daffodil bulbs to the community, which were well-received and transformed the church green into a vibrant floral display. However, the council argued that further planting could interfere with sightlines for traffic, raising safety issues.
The council offered alternative sites for planting but did not support the initial proposal’s scale. “We were all hoping to adorn the main Village Green for next Spring … but sadly the Parish Council last night rejected my plan,” said May, expressing his disappointment.
The decision has sparked mixed reactions among residents. One user on social media, hil1962, remarked, “They are being incredibly shortsighted in my opinion.” This sentiment reflects a growing frustration among community members who appreciate the beauty of May’s contributions.
The Elstead Parish Council spokesperson defended their position, stating, “The Parish Council has a duty to balance the practical usage of our green along with the views of our residents.” This balancing act often proves challenging in tight-knit communities like Elstead.
As discussions continue, it remains unclear how this will impact future community gardening initiatives. Brian May, with his 3.6 million followers on Instagram, has a platform to rally support and perhaps revisit his proposal in a different light.
