Deportation Halted for Yemeni Refugees Amid Legal Battles

A federal judge’s ruling has temporarily halted the deportation of about 3,000 Yemeni refugees, emphasizing the ongoing legal battles over immigration protections in the United States. Judge Dale E Ho criticized former homeland security secretary Kristi Noem for her decision to terminate Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Yemen.

“TPS holders from Yemen are not ‘killers, leeches, and entitlement junkies,’” Judge Ho stated, pointing to the humanitarian factors surrounding these individuals. The TPS was set to expire on May 1, 2026, but this ruling extends it, providing much-needed relief.

The situation is particularly dire for Zoila Guerra Sandoval, who faces deportation just two years after her partner died in the Key Bridge collapse. She shared her feelings of betrayal: “I felt tricked.” Her application for immigration relief initiated her deportation proceedings.

Guerra Sandoval is one of 425 Yemenis who have applied for TPS. The Trump administration aimed to cancel TPS for 13 countries as part of its broader immigration crackdown. With travel advisories warning against going to Yemen due to terrorism and civil unrest, many fear returning home.

As Sejal Zota noted, “This really is life or death” for many affected individuals. The US Supreme Court has agreed to consider an appeal from the Trump administration regarding TPS rulings, adding another layer of uncertainty.

The next expected development will be crucial for thousands awaiting a decision on their future. For now, many breathe a sigh of relief as they navigate this complex landscape.
