MetService Warns of Heavy Rain and Strong Winds in South Island

A significant autumnal change is set to bring heavy rain and strong winds to the South Island this weekend, with MetService warning of up to 250 millimetres of rain. Residents in areas like the West Coast, Fiordland, Otago, and Canterbury should prepare for a dramatic shift in weather.

For weeks, many enjoyed mild conditions with light winds and sunny days. Braydon White from MetService noted, “While we’ve been enjoying the light winds and lack of rain for the last while, these crisp still mornings are about to end and the wetter side of autumn is set to come back with a bang.” This transition will be marked by a low pressure system bringing significant rainfall.

The immediate forecast shows that the heaviest rain is expected on Thursday morning, with rates reaching 20 to 30 millimetres per hour. An orange heavy rain warning has already been issued for the ranges of the Westland District starting at 9pm tomorrow. Additionally, a heavy rain watch covers Fiordland north of Doubtful Sound and the headwaters of Otago and Canterbury’s lakes and rivers.

As temperatures rise, overnight lows will be as much as 15°C warmer than recent averages across the North Island. This temperature increase accompanies the approaching storm system. Braydon White remarked, “The wetter weather brings along much warmer temperatures.”

As we approach Friday, strong southwesterlies will sweep across the region, creating large swells along western coastlines. Local fishermen like Sam Thompson from Greymouth are bracing for rough seas. “We’re used to this kind of weather but it can get dangerous out there,” he said.

The community response has been varied; some are stocking up on supplies while others plan indoor activities as they anticipate staying home during the storm. Many remember last year’s flooding and hope that infrastructure improvements since then will hold up against this impending deluge.

This weekend’s weather could impact travel plans as well. The New Zealand Transport Agency advises caution on roads prone to flooding or landslides. They urge drivers to stay informed through local updates.

The South Island is preparing for a challenging few days ahead as this significant weather event unfolds. Residents are encouraged to stay alert and heed warnings from MetService as they navigate through this autumn storm.
