Ivory Coast advance to World Cup knockouts after win against Curaçao

Ivory Coast have progressed to the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time, securing their spot with a victory over Curaçao. The win ensures the African nation will continue their campaign in the round of 32.

The Ivorians needed at least a point to advance from the group stage, having previously been eliminated at this stage in their three prior World Cup appearances. The team quickly settled into the match, with Nicolas Pépé scoring early in the game.

The opening goal came after seven minutes when Curaçao defenders were dispossessed by Yan Diomande, who then set up Pépé for a tap-in. Pépé, a former Arsenal forward, later added a second goal in the 65th minute, striking a left-footed shot into the top corner past Curaçao goalkeeper Eloy Room.

This result means Ivory Coast finished second in Group E. The team achieved two victories in a World Cup for the first time in their history.

Curaçao’s World Cup Debut

Curaçao, the smallest nation by population to participate in a men’s World Cup, were eliminated from the tournament. Despite their exit, they created several scoring opportunities throughout the match.

One notable chance for Curaçao occurred just before half-time when forward Juninho Bacuna broke into the box but shot wide of the near post. The team departs the tournament having enhanced their reputation through their performances against larger football nations, including earning their first World Cup point from a draw against Ecuador.

For Ecuador, their match against Germany is crucial for their qualification hopes. Germany has already secured the top spot in Group E, allowing them to potentially rest players ahead of the knockout rounds. Ecuador needs a win to have a chance at qualifying for the next phase, likely as one of the best third-placed teams.

Ecuador entered the tournament with high expectations due to their strong defensive record. However, they have struggled to score goals, being one of four nations yet to find the net in this World Cup. Despite this, Ecuador has had more shots on target per match than any team except Germany, but has also missed the most significant scoring chances.

Germany, currently on an 11-match winning streak and the tournament’s top scorer with nine goals, is not expected to take it easy on their opponent. Rotation players for Germany will be keen to prove their worth for minutes in the knockout rounds.

Historical Context and Future Match-ups

The achievement of the current Ivory Coast squad marks a significant milestone that previous generations, including those led by Didier Drogba and Yaya Touré, were unable to reach. This success comes 20 years after Ivory Coast first qualified for a World Cup, finally breaking a series of unlucky moments and near misses in past tournaments.

In 2006, Ivory Coast faced a challenging group with Argentina and the Netherlands, failing to advance despite a victory over Serbia and Montenegro. The 2010 tournament saw them in another tough group, drawing with Portugal but losing to Brazil, and missing out on progression despite beating North Korea.

A particularly difficult memory for fans was in 2014, when Ivory Coast, considered favourites to progress, conceded a 93rd-minute goal in a defeat to Greece, leading to their elimination. The pressure on the current players was intensified by the team’s failure to qualify for the last two World Cups.

Despite possibly lacking the individual star power of past squads, this Ivory Coast team has demonstrated strong spirit and mental resilience, notably seen in their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations victory. During that tournament, they sacked their manager during the group stage but still went on to lift the trophy.

Coach Emerse Faé is credited with getting the best out of the players tactically and managing pressure effectively. This generation has now given fans in Ivory Coast a major reason to celebrate by overcoming their group stage hurdle.

Ivory Coast is scheduled to play the runners-up from Group I, which will be either France or Norway, in the second round on June 30 in Arlington, Texas.
