Socceroos make six changes for Paraguay clash in San Francisco

Socceroos’ lineup changes and early play

The Socceroos have made six changes to their starting lineup for the FIFA World Cup group stage match against Paraguay in San Francisco. This fixture concludes their group stage campaign. The coach, Tony Popovic, opted for a 3-4-2-1 formation for the Australian side.

Early in the match, the Socceroos demonstrated strong possession, holding 65 per cent of the ball. Despite this dominance, they had two shots, with one described as an inaccurate attempt by Aiden O’Neill. The team’s threat has primarily come from the right side of the field.

Jody Bos was noted for a teasing cross into the penalty area, putting the Paraguay defence under pressure. Later, Bos linked up with O’Neill and Volpato before taking a shot from 20 metres with his left foot, which was saved by Orlando Gill.

Mid-half incidents and tactical observations

Midway through the first half, Connor Metcalfe was involved in an accidental collision with Andrés Cubas, resulting in a cut on his eyebrow. Metcalfe briefly left the field to receive medical attention and required a new shirt due to blood. Play resumed shortly after the incident.

Volpato has been a key player in general play, contributing to the team’s attacking efforts. However, his corner deliveries have been less effective, often failing to beat the first defender. A long ball from Harry Souttar aimed at Aziz Behich on the left wing also skipped away, highlighting some missed opportunities.

Paraguay, managed by Gustavo Alfaro, adopted a 5-3-2 formation for the match. Alfaro has previously expressed concerns about the mandatory hydration breaks in the World Cup, suggesting they disrupt the flow of the game and turn halves into quarters. He believes these breaks should be optional and agreed upon by both teams, rather than being compulsory.

The match saw Paraguay create a few half-chances. Gabriel Ávalos had an opportunity inside the Australian penalty area but his touch took him wide, and a header from a cross went wide. Pat Beach, the Australian goalkeeper, denied Paraguay a corner by racing across to deal with a deflected cross.
