Trent Bridge: New Zealand takes control on day three against England

Black Caps establish lead

New Zealand gained a significant advantage on the third day of the third Test against England at Trent Bridge, despite an early setback. After being reduced to 12-2 in their second innings, trailing by just 96 runs, a strong partnership helped them recover. By the close of play, the Black Caps had reached 120-3, extending their lead to 204 runs.

The day began with England hoping to build a substantial first-innings lead from their overnight score of 223-2. However, disciplined bowling from New Zealand saw England stumble, eventually being bowled out for 354. This left New Zealand with an 84-run lead heading into their second innings.

The momentum shifted early in New Zealand’s second innings when Jofra Archer claimed two quick wickets, dismissing Tom Latham for 4 and Devon Conway for 5 within the first five overs. This spell reduced New Zealand to 12-2, seemingly putting England back in contention. However, Rachin Ravindra, who remained unbeaten on 60, along with Daryl Mitchell, who was 26 not out, forged an unbroken 69-run partnership for the fourth wicket, stabilising the innings and pushing New Zealand’s lead.

England’s first innings collapse

England’s batting faltered on day three, losing three wickets in the first six overs. From their overnight position of 223-2, they slipped to 234-5. Nathan Smith and Will O’Rourke were instrumental in New Zealand’s early breakthroughs, accounting for set batsmen Joe Root and Jacob Bethell, neither of whom added to their overnight scores. Jamie Smith also fell swiftly, contributing to the loss of three wickets in the opening six overs.

Harry Brook and Ben Stokes attempted to rebuild the innings, adding 56 runs together. Brook reached a 66-ball fifty before lunch. However, Stokes’ scratchy form continued, and he was eventually dismissed by Zak Foulkes, who had been brought in as a concussion substitute. Foulkes also claimed Brook’s wicket soon after lunch, leaving England seven wickets down and still trailing by a significant margin.

Gus Atkinson and Archer contributed some runs, but both were eventually dismissed. Archer fended a delivery from Smith to slip, while Atkinson was caught by Mitchell off O’Rourke. Foulkes then claimed Josh Tongue to end England’s first innings at 354.

Series context and outlook

The three-match series is currently level at 1-1. England secured a victory in the first Test at Lord’s, winning by 115 runs. New Zealand then responded by winning the second Test at The Kia Oval by 253 runs. This third Test at Trent Bridge is therefore crucial in determining the series winner.

On day two, New Zealand had slumped from 317 without loss to being all out after their last six wickets fell for 77 runs. Ben Stokes played a key role in this collapse, taking three wickets for 13 runs in a superb eight-over spell. His wickets included Daryl Mitchell, nightwatchman O’Rourke, and Mitchell Santner. Jofra Archer wrapped up New Zealand’s innings by trapping Ben Sears lbw.

In England’s response on day two, opener Emilio Gay fell for a duck. However, Ben Duckett, who was dropped on eight, went on to score his first Test century for a year, reaching three figures off 88 balls. Duckett and Bethell formed a 179-run partnership, helping England recover from the early loss of Gay. Bethell ended day two unbeaten on 74, with Root 21 not out, as England finished 215 runs in arrears.

The pitch conditions at Trent Bridge have shown variable bounce and seam movement, particularly after being baked by the sun. This misbehaviour of the surface could pose challenges for England as they face a potentially significant chase on days four and five. The fourth day of the third Test between England and New Zealand is scheduled to be broadcast live on Sunday from 10.15am.
