Los Angeles: Spain secures dominant win against Austria in World Cup last-32

Spain Advances to Last 16

Spain achieved their first knockout match victory at a men’s World Cup in 16 years, comfortably defeating Austria in Los Angeles to progress to the last 16. The match saw Mikel Oyarzabal score twice, bringing his tournament total to four goals, while Pedro Porro also found the back of the net.

The Spanish side gradually increased pressure throughout the first half. After 36 minutes, Marc Cucurella’s low cross was converted by Mikel Oyarzabal from 12 yards, giving Spain the lead. Their dominance continued into the second half, with Pedro Porro heading home Alex Baena’s cross in the 66th minute to double their advantage.

The victory was sealed when Cucurella and Oyarzabal combined once more. Cucurella delivered a through-ball, allowing Oyarzabal to score his second goal of the match, just a minute before the end of regular time. This win marks a significant step for Spain, who now join Mexico in maintaining a clean sheet through their first four matches of the 2026 World Cup.

Key Player Performances and Team Dynamics

Goalkeeper Unai Simon played a crucial role, securing his fourth successive clean sheet as Austria struggled to create significant threats. Early in the match, Spain had a goal disallowed when Marc Cucurella’s shot from a half-cleared corner was ruled out due to a foul by Pau Cubarsi on Austria’s goalkeeper Alexander Schlager.

Schlager made several key saves to keep Austria in the game during the first half, including a low save from Oyarzabal and a double save from Alex Baena’s free-kick and Lamine Yamal’s follow-up shot. Despite Schlager’s efforts, Spain’s persistent attack eventually broke through.

For Austria, their first World Cup knockout fixture since 1954 saw limited opportunities. Substitute Sasa Kalajdzic came close with a header shortly after entering the game, but Austria was largely contained by the Spanish defence.

Meanwhile, Spain’s midfielder Fabián Ruiz has spoken about the team’s internal unity, stating that the focus is on mutual support rather than individual roles. He acknowledged that regaining his form after an injury had been challenging but affirmed he is now at 100%. Fabián, a three-time European champion and winner of the past two Champions Leagues with Paris Saint-Germain, has been a key figure in midfield discussions.

The team’s coach, Luis de la Fuente, faces decisions regarding midfield combinations, especially with players like Pedri and Rodri consistently starting. Fabián, Nico Williams, Lamine Yamal, and Mikel Merino all experienced significant injury layoffs during the season. Fabián started Spain’s opening game against Cape Verde, but subsequent matches saw Dani Olmo and then Mikel Merino in the starting lineup.

Fabián emphasised that the team’s core idea remains consistent, regardless of who is on the pitch. He highlighted the importance of experienced players like Rodri, Unai Simón, Mikel Oyarzabal, and Aymeric Laporte in providing leadership within the squad. Fabián, who was raised by his mother Chari Peña, expressed his dedication to his teammates, particularly the younger players, and his readiness to contribute wherever the manager sees fit. The team departed their training base in Chattanooga, Tennessee, for Los Angeles ahead of the match.
