Silverstone’s high-speed test to push tyres to the limit during Sprint weekend

The British Grand Prix at Silverstone is anticipated to be a rigorous examination for tyres, according to Pirelli. The Italian tyre manufacturer, serving as title sponsor for the event, expects teams to balance speed with tyre management during the season’s fourth Sprint weekend.

Silverstone is recognised as one of Formula 1‘s most demanding circuits. It is one of only two races, alongside Monza, to have featured on every championship calendar since 1950 under the same name. This weekend marks Pirelli‘s 518th appearance in the Formula 1 World Championship.

The first Formula 1 World Championship race at Silverstone was won by Giuseppe Farina in an Alfa Romeo equipped with Pirelli Stella Bianca tyres. This event will be the 77th British Grand Prix.

Circuit demands and tyre compounds

The 5.891-kilometre Northamptonshire track presents significant challenges for drivers and engineers. Its 18 corners include some of the fastest direction changes on the calendar, with the Maggotts-Becketts-Chapel sequence noted as a major technical hurdle. Lewis Hamilton has likened driving the circuit to being in a fighter jet cockpit, highlighting the immense demands placed on both the driver and the car due to the combination of high-speed corners and long straights.

These characteristics have led Pirelli to select the hardest compounds from its range for the event: the C1 Hard, C2 Medium, and C3 Soft. This decision reflects the substantial loads generated at Silverstone, where some corners subject tyres to forces exceeding 5G, placing it among the most demanding tracks alongside Suzuka and Spa.

Despite the relatively smooth asphalt and high natural grip from year-round use by various motorsports, the sustained high-speed cornering causes considerable tyre degradation. The front axle, particularly the left-front tyre, bears the heaviest workload due to numerous fast right-hand bends.

Strategy and weather considerations

Despite the high demands, Pirelli anticipates a relatively straightforward strategy for the main race. Engineers believe a one-stop race is likely to be the quickest option on Sunday, with teams expected to primarily use the C2 and C3 compounds. The C1 and C2 compounds have consistently provided strong mechanical stability over extended periods.

The Sprint format will influence tyre usage throughout the weekend. With only one practice session before Sprint qualifying, teams are expected to assess the hardest C1 compound early during Friday’s opening practice. Quickly gathering long-run data will be crucial before parc fermé conditions are enforced.

However, strategy planning at Silverstone is rarely solely dependent on dry-weather pace. Britain’s famously unpredictable weather remains a significant factor. Rain has impacted the British Grand Prix on race day in the last two years, necessitating the use of Pirelli‘s Cinturato Intermediate tyres. Another mixed forecast could complicate strategy decisions.

Beyond the race, Pirelli will remain at Silverstone for two days of development testing for next year’s dry-weather tyres. Mercedes and Williams will provide track support for this programme, which aims to gather valuable data as Formula 1 continues to refine its tyres in line with evolving technical regulations.

Off the track, Pirelli has also commissioned bespoke trophies for the event. The podium trophy, designed by artist Paul Oz, incorporates elements of a Formula 1 front wing, utilising materials such as aluminium and carbon fibre. A separate Marshal Award, created with Italian firm Bartoccini Premiazioni, honours track marshals with a design inspired by the Silverstone circuit layout.

Historically, the British Grand Prix has been held at three venues: Silverstone, Aintree, and Brands Hatch, though Silverstone has hosted the majority. Ferrari leads all constructors with 18 victories, with McLaren following with 15.

The development work for the 2027 season will commence immediately after the race, with Mercedes and Williams staying at the circuit on Tuesday and Wednesday to assist Pirelli.
